Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Paediatric OT
Paediatric Occupational Therapy is a specialised area of healthcare that focuses on helping children develop the skills they need for daily living and independence. An OT works closely with young children to enhance their abilities in various areas of life, including self-care, play, social skills, and school readiness.
Your child may benefit from OT if they have difficulties with everyday tasks such as dressing, eating, handwriting, or managing emotions. If your child struggles with fine motor skills, social interactions, sensory processing, or seems behind their peers in developmental milestones, an OT assessment can help identify areas of support.
The first session typically involves getting to know your child and your family's goals. I'll observe your child during play and everyday activities, ask questions about their development and daily routines, and begin to understand their strengths and challenges. It's a relaxed, child-friendly environment — no pressure!
Individual therapy sessions are typically one hour. The frequency and duration of therapy depends on your child's individual needs and goals, which we'll discuss together.

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a broad and in-depth assessment of a child's ability to participate in everyday life activities. It's useful when your circumstances or support needs have changed, or if there is a mismatch between your child's needs and current support levels. These typically range from 10 to 15 hours, inclusive of the report and assessment.
Simply let your child know they're going to meet someone who helps kids learn and play! Bring along any relevant reports or assessments you may have. Most importantly, there's no need to worry — sessions are designed to be fun and engaging for your child.
